In addition to successful completion of the relevant radiation protection training, the work of radiation protection officers requires the following successful training qualifications (in accordance with § 80 AllgStrSchV):
Radiation protection officers appointed to work with radiation sources for non-medical purposes must prove that they have successfully completed one of the following training courses:
- relevant scientific or technical education at a university, university of applied sciences or vocational higher school, or
- university education in human, dental or veterinary medicine or
- relevant education in accordance with MTD Act.
If the intended activity relates only to non-destructive testing using X-ray equipment or enclosed radioactive materials in radiation treatment rooms, proof of at least three and a half years of training, as intended for apprenticeships in the technical sector, or comparable training, is sufficient.
For radiation protection officers in accordance with paragraph 1 (see above) whose activities are limited exclusively to the following applications:
- measuring equipment for thickness, density or weight per unit, on level indicators, on portable X-ray fluorescence analyzers or on radiation sources with a comparable risk, or
- Industrial or commercial areas of activity with naturally occurring radioactive materials (in accordance with § 11 AllgStrSchV or § 27 StrSchG 2020)
Instead of one of the above training qualifications (in accordance with paragraph 1), the specialist knowledge required for the job is sufficient.
The same applies to radiation protection officers who are not named to the competent authority in accordance with Sections 16 and 17 StrSchG 2020.
Radiation protection training (without further training requirements) is sufficient for radiation protection officers whose work is limited exclusively to devices that comply with the following dose rate and activity values:
- devices whose dose rates are a maximum of 3 µSv/h at a distance of 0.1 m from any touchable surface of the device, or
- Devices whose activity is no more than ten times the exemption limits in accordance with AllgStrSchV Appendix 1 Section D Table 1 Column 2 (observe the molecular formula).
