Disposal of Radioactive Materials & Decontamination
We support you in the safe treatment of radioactive materials — from classification to final disposal.
Handling radioactive materials requires particular care — particularly when radiation sources have to be shut down, plants dismantled or contaminated areas cleaned.
Seibersdorf Labor GmbH supports organizations in the safe, legally compliant disposal of radioactive materials and with decontamination measures.
Our services include radiological measurements and evaluations as well as organizational support for the professional treatment of radioactive materials.
We support our customers from analyzing the situation to decontamination measures and approving materials or areas.
Radioactive sources and materials must be disposed of safely and in accordance with legal requirements after use.
We help organizations with:
Our experts support the entire process and ensure that all regulatory requirements are met.
Since we use numerous sources of radiation ourselves and have extensive experience in radiation protection, we also offer the transport and disposal of radioactive materials and radiation sources. We not only take care of the ADR-compliant packaging, the preparation of the necessary transport documents and the transport itself, but also the proper disposal and all necessary coordination and contacts with the relevant authorities as part of the transfer. Our many years of practice enable us to carry out this demanding and complex process safely, legally and efficiently.
Many gamma emitters used in industry must be replaced at regular intervals to ensure the required radiation intensity. This process includes the replacement of the existing radiator with a new one and two transports of radiation sources: the delivery of the new radiator and the removal of the old one. Local exchanges require special radiation protection permits, which plant operators usually do not have. We have these permits and have many years of experience in the complete processing of the process. For example, we have already implemented projects involving around 160 different radiation sources during a single turnaround — a project that requires careful planning and precise control of complex logistics.
In the last 30 years, we have installed around 250 portal monitors in Austria. One of these systems triggers a radiation alarm almost every day. The procedure provided for in the Radiation Protection Act and in the Ordinance generally provides for a chain of alerts via the police, fire department and the responsible authorities. In order to relieve these areas, we offer full management of such incidents. For this, we have the necessary permits, the appropriate equipment and extensive practical experience. In doing so, the legal framework is consistently met, as the entire process is carried out in close cooperation and under the control of the competent authorities. By regularly handling such radiation protection operations over three decades, we are able to implement the necessary measures safely, efficiently and discreetly.
Seibersdorf is one of the largest operators of nuclear facilities in Austria and therefore has extensive experience in the decontamination of buildings, plants, vehicles and people. Depending on the task, different processes and equipment are used, the application of which requires practical experience and technical competence. The planning and evaluation of suitable measures also requires detailed knowledge of the radiation protection requirements. Appropriate access permits and professionally exposed, qualified personnel are just as necessary. We offer decontamination measures as a service and take care of the entire process — from planning and implementation to the disposal of radioactive waste to reporting and coordination with the responsible authorities. In the case of radioactive finds of objects or objects which are only partially contaminated on some surfaces, proper decontamination can significantly reduce the mass and volume of radioactive materials to be disposed of. This is not only sustainable because the clean material does not unnecessarily burden the Austrian repository, but also saves costs.
In the event of contamination with radioactive substances, decontamination measures may be necessary.
We help organizations with:
These measures may be necessary, for example, in laboratories, medical facilities or industrial plants.
After decontamination measures or when dismantling plants, materials or areas must often be radiologically cleared.
We carry out clearance measurements for:
The measurements are used to release materials or areas in accordance with applicable radiation protection regulations.
To evaluate possible radioactive contamination, we carry out measurements on surfaces, objects and rooms.
Among other things, these tests are relevant for:
Our measurements provide a reliable basis for further radiation protection measures.
All measures in the area of disposal and decontamination must be comprehensibly documented.
We help organizations with:
In this way, we ensure that all measures are documented transparently and in accordance with the authorities.
