Electromagnetic Fields

Effects of Electromagnetic Fields

Description of the different effects of electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields.

Electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields occur in many areas of everyday life as well as in technical applications. Their potential effects on humans have been intensively investigated scientifically for decades. A distinction is made between direct acute effects, indirect effects and possible long-term effects.

In addition to the well-researched direct acute effects that can occur at field strengths above the currently recommended limits, some scientific studies point to biological effects even below these limits. However, the health relevance of these effects still needs to be further investigated before final conclusions can be drawn.

Due to uncertain data on some of these reported effects, low-frequency magnetic fields (https://publications.iarc.fr/98) and high-frequency electromagnetic fields (https://publications.iarc.fr/126) were classified by the WHO International Cancer Research Agency (IARC) as potentially carcinogenic to humans (class 2b).

Direct Acute Effects

For strong electromagnetic fields above the recommended limits set by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), there is a reliable scientific understanding of the direct interactions with the human body.

These limits protect against two central mechanisms of action:

  • Non-thermal effects due to direct influence on nerve and muscle cells

  • Thermal effects due to tissue heating as a result of absorption of electromagnetic energy

The international guidelines are designed in such a way that these direct health effects are reliably avoided.

Indirect Effects

In addition to direct biological effects, electromagnetic fields can also have indirect effects. These include:

  • Disorders of electronic medical implants such as pacemakers

  • Projectile effects on ferromagnetic objects in strong static magnetic fields

  • accidental triggering of electrical ignition devices

  • Fire or explosion risks due to sparking, contact currents or induced electrical discharges

Such effects primarily affect special work environments and are specifically taken into account as part of safety assessments.

Long-term Effects

With regard to possible long-term health effects of electromagnetic fields, the scientific studies available to date do not show sufficient evidence of proven chronic effects in humans, although there are still a number of unanswered questions. Research in this area is therefore continuing internationally in order to take new scientific findings into account at an early stage and to continuously review existing protection concepts.

EMF Exposure Assessment

EMF in Workplaces & in Industry

Assessment of workers' exposure and assistance with employer obligations.

Legislative Background

EU Directive 2013/35/EU protects the safety and health of employees from risks caused by electromagnetic fields at work. By 1 July 2016, all Member States had to transpose the content of this Directive into national law.

In Austria, this was done through the Electromagnetic Fields Ordinance (VEMF), which came into force on August 1, 2016. The VEMF is largely based on the EU Directive, but contains some more detailed requirements and minor deviations.

In Germany, 2013/35/EU was implemented into national law through the Ordinance on the Protection of Employees from Risks from Electromagnetic Fields (EMFV).

Practical Implementation in the Workplace

The Directive requires employers to assess all workplaces for the exposure of employees to electromagnetic fields. The aim is to identify, avoid or reduce risks to a minimum. Employees must also be informed about the results of the risk assessment and the protective measures taken.

Although these obligations appear complex at first, practical experience shows that in most workplaces, field strengths are well below the permissible limits. Devices and machines that are also accessible to the general public (e.g. commercially available tools) are generally already considered compliant, as stricter protection limits of other directives are met.

Non-binding guides (general guide, assessment examples, short version for SMEs) provide practical advice on implementation. Measurements and assessments should be carried out on site under real operating conditions in order to record actual exposure and demonstrate compliance with the limit values.

We provide you with comprehensive support in implementing EU Directive 2013/35/EU or the Austrian VEMF and the German EMFV:

  • Workplace evaluation in accordance with EU Directive 2013/35/EU or VEMF and EMFV

Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Fields (RF)

Measurement, calculation and evaluation of radio frequency fields, e.g. from mobile communications or radio systems

Radio frequency electromagnetic fields (RF EMF) occur wherever either radio technologies are used for communication (from mobile telephones to WLAN to industrial radio systems) or where RF EMF is used to heat materials (e.g. microwave heating, diathermy). Exposure to RF EMF results in induced currents and power absorption in the human body. In order to avoid health risks, these effects are clearly limited by international limits:

  • Induced currents and electrical field strengths in tissue must not exceed certain limits

  • Power absorption is measured and limited via the specific absorption rate (SAR)

Devices with a transmission power of more than 20 mW in particular must be tested with regard to SAR to ensure that the radiation energy absorbed by the user is within the limits.

We combine precise measurement technology, cutting-edge simulation technologies and many years of expertise in RF EMF to make exposure assessments safe, reliable and practical.

SAR Measurements

We carry out precise measurements in the frequency range from 10 MHz to 6 GHz, in accordance with the relevant international standards (EN IEC 62209-1528). This allows manufacturers and operators to reliably prove the safety of their devices.

Computer Simulations

For detailed analyses of induced currents, electrical field strengths in tissue and power absorption, we use high-resolution anatomical body models and cutting-edge software on high-performance computers. This enables an exact representation of exposure in all tissues of the body.

Device Development Support

We help device manufacturers with SAR-optimized designs to minimize body flows and efficiently control power consumption. In this way, safety, compliance with standards and user comfort are taken into account right from the start.

Low Frequency Electromagnetic Fields (LF)

Low-frequency fields arise wherever electrical energy is transmitted or used, for example in power lines, transformers, electrical machines or electronic devices in the workplace. Exposure to LF-EMF can lead to induced currents in the body that can produce certain biological effects.

Particularly strong low-frequency magnetic fields occur, for example, in the immediate vicinity of welding systems or acousto-magnetic electronic article surveillance systems (EAS). In order to ensure the safety of employees and the general public, limits have been set for induced currents and electrical field strengths in tissue. These limits are based on international guidelines, such as the recommendations of ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection), and serve to protect against acute health effects.

We combine practical measurements, cutting-edge simulation techniques and many years of expertise in LF-EMF to safely evaluate workplaces, industrial plants and other electrical devices and to design them in accordance with legal requirements.

Measurements of Low-Frequency Fields

We carry out precise measurements of electric and magnetic fields in the frequency range from DC to 10 MHz. This includes exposure assessments at workplaces, industrial plants, electrical installations or devices.

Exposure Assessment and Simulations

To assess exposure in detail, we use on-site measurements and cutting-edge computer simulations to analyze the distribution of induced currents and electrical field strengths in relevant areas of the body.

Protection & Optimization Concepts

We develop technical and organizational measures to reduce exposure to a minimum and support companies in implementing legal requirements, standards and guidelines.

Limits, Standards & Guidelines

Analysis based on a variety of national and international standards.

Electrical and electronic devices sold on the European internal market must meet minimum requirements for the protection of persons from excessive exposure to electromagnetic fields. This is a prerequisite for CE marking. Compliance with these requirements is regulated by a series of European standards, which define both the relevant test requirements and the permissible limits. This ensures that devices are safe to operate and that legal requirements are reliably met.

Equipment testing in accordance with relevant standards

Precise testing of electrical and electronic devices for compliance with applicable limits for electromagnetic fields.
