EMC Tests for Devices in Accordance with International Standards

Conformity testing is the cornerstone of any EMC assessment. It ensures that devices, components, and systems meet applicable electromagnetic requirements and do not interfere with other products or environments. This is based on national and international standards that define clear limit values and test procedures. By conducting tests in accordance with these standards, manufacturers create the conditions necessary for market access, approval, and the safe operation of their products. At the same time, these tests help ensure the long-term functionality and reliability of devices in real-world operating environments.

We test in accordance with all major EMC standards for Europe and international markets — reliably, reproducibly and comprehensibly documented. Our test reports are recognized by authorities, approval bodies and international partners as part of ILAC MRA.

This includes:

  • Harmonised standards in accordance with EMC Directive
  • EN/IEC 61000-4-x and 61000-6-x series
  • CISPR standards (CISPR 16-2-x series)
  • ETSI standards for EMC (ETSI EN 301 489-x series)

EMC for Military, Aerospace, & Special Applications

We start where standards are no longer sufficient.

In certain industries, there are significantly stricter EMC requirements than in traditional industry. Aerospace, defense systems, or specialized high-performance devices must withstand extreme electromagnetic conditions without interfering with each other or being disturbed. This is exactly where the special tests at Seibersdorf Laboratories come in: We test where complex operating conditions, safety-critical applications or industry-specific special standards are paramount.

Special tests require precision, flexibility and a deep understanding of the respective areas of application. Our laboratories offer modern testing environments, experienced EMC specialists and the safety of accredited testing processes.

For companies, this means reliable results, predictable approval processes and the assurance that products function stably even under exceptional conditions.

Challenges in specialist industries and why specific tests are crucial

Devices and systems in aviation or military environments are frequently exposed to strong electromagnetic fields, changing loads, long lines or extreme operating conditions. Mistakes here would not only be costly, but could also jeopardize security. For this reason, these industries require an EMC assessment that goes well beyond traditional standards.

  • complex system environments, e.g. components for use on military platforms or in aircraft
  • extreme sources of interference such as high-voltage lines, radios, radar or inductive drives
  • long signal and supply lines with high coupling sensitivity
  • strict approval requirements of the relevant authorities or organizations
  • Safety requirements that do not allow failures

You get clarity about the actual usability of your product before it is integrated into a highly critical environment.

Our focus areas in these areas

We cover the most important standard areas that fall outside of classic EMC tests. The services are modular and can be combined for devices or systems in several areas of application.

Stable Operation in Demanding Electromagnetic Environments

EMC Tests on Buildings & Systems

Electromagnetic challenges occur not only in the laboratory — but especially in real world operating conditions.

In production facilites, office buildings, technical centers, or critical infrastructure environments, a wide variety of electromagnetic sources coexist: machines, frequency inverters, control panels, wireless applications, power supplies, and IT systems. If these are not properly coordinated, interference can occur—resulting in outages, data errors, unintended shutdowns, or sporadic malfunctions.

This is precicely where Seibersdorf Laboratories' EMC testing comes into play: We conduct on-site analyses of buildings, facilities and technical areas, identify sources of malefunction and lay the groundwork for reliable and safe operations.

This provides significant added value for your business: improving operational reliability and avoiding costly downtime.

Why Early EMC is Advisable

Companies tend to call EMC experts only when a problem has already occurred. However, our experience shows that a preventive assessment of buildings, systems or new technical areas prevents many problems from the outset. An early EMC analysis provides clear planning security, particularly for new buildings, modifications or the replacement of large machines.

Early EMC tests mean: less operating risk, reliable processes and lower follow-up costs for expansions or modernizations.

Why Conduct EMC Testing in Seibersdorf?

Seibersdorf combines scientific precision with practical experience directly from industry.

Companies benefit from:

  • a team with a comprehensive understanding of EMC
  • state-of-the-art measurement equipment for real operating scenarios
  • clear, technically feasible recommendations
  • rapid response to urgent issues
Simulation of Electromagnetic Fields

Shielding Performance of Housings

A well-designed housing can significantly reduce unwanted emissions while increasing a device's resistance to electromagnetic interference. The choice of material, housing design, contacts, seals, and cable openings all have a significant influence on the shielding effect.

Through targeted analysis and optimization of shielding properties, potential EMC problems can be identified at an early stage and significantly improve the conditions for successfully passing EMC tests.

We offer you the following services:

  • Shield attenuation measurement
  • Determination of material parameters
  • Numerical simulations

Optimizing the Shielding Properties of Device Housings

The housing of an electronic device is decisive for the EMC properties of the finished product. A well-designed housing reduces emissions and increases immunity and is therefore crucial for passing EMC tests.

Chassis Parts Testing

  • Determination of the shielding effect of the material used
With the help of a setup to measure the shielding properties in one of our anechoic chambers, the shielding properties of the material from which the housing is built can be determined in accordance with IEEE 299.

  • Openings in the housing
Different openings are necessary in every housing. The reduction of the shielding effect due to the introduction of the differently designed openings is measured. The properties and attachment of a cover over the opening (e.g. also cable outlets) can also be determined.

  • Connection of housing parts, EMC seals
The connection of housing parts is decisive for the overall shielding of the housing. The parts can, for example, be bolted together and EMC seals are inserted on the contact surfaces for a low-resistance connection. The effect of the connections on the shielding properties of the housing is determined.

  • Ageing of housing parts
All of the above measurements of the shielding effect can be carried out before and after various aging processes (e.g. temperature treatment). This makes it possible to determine how the EMC properties of the device change as a result of aging.

Inspection of Entire Housings

All tests on the housing parts can also be carried out on the entire housing, in which a standard-compliant emission measurement is carried out in the anechoic chamber. To do this, an emission source is placed inside the housing, which generates a broadband signal. The shielding effect of the housing is determined by measuring the emission.

Determination of Dielectric Material Parameters

The dielectric material parameters are essential parameters for the characterization of materials when their behavior in electromagnetic fields (spatial propagation, damping) is to be described. We offer two different measurement methods:

  • Contactless methods: Freespace method, typical with regard to wavelength for larger samples, e.g. window panes in vehicles, masonry of buildings
  • Contact process: Open-ended coaxial line method, typical with regard to wavelength for smaller samples, e.g. plastic housings of components, but also various liquids

The dielectric material parameters determined by measurement can be used in various numerical simulations.

Numerical Simulations

Numerical simulation offers cost-effective support with continuous optimization for the entire development cycle from the first prototypes to the finished product. In numerical simulation, field quantities can be made available that are not accessible through measurement. In addition, any number of changes to products can be carried out in the simulation, which in reality would require a great deal of effort.

We offer the following numerical methods:

  • Finite differences in the time domain (FDTD)
  • Finite elements (FE) with multi-physics
  • 3D ray tracing (GTD/UTD)

We are happy to model your scenario with the appropriate simulation software and can help optimize your product by making the electromagnetic fields visible.

The step from CAD model in simulation, to illustrative 3D printing (e.g. using cutting-edge laser sintering, SLS) to EMC evaluation for functional prototypes, or even for the first small series, is also a smaller one.

We also have many years of expertise in the area of 3D printing. Our competent team will be happy to advise you and support your development from initial planning to implementation of the finished product.

We Support you with your Project

Analysis of EMC Requirements, Pre-Compliance Testing and Troubleshooting of Products

Is your product compatible with other devices and compliant with the legal EMC requirements of the European market?

Before launching their product on the market, manufacturers must demonstrate compliance with the relevant regulations. These vary depending on the economic region. For the EMC sector, for example, these include the EMC Directive and UN ECE Regulation 10 in Europe, FCC CFR 47 in the United States, and MIL standards for aerospace and military technology.

Often, it is not enough to simply meet the legal requirements. However, tenders may contain specific EMC requirements that go beyond the minimum legal requirements and demand special test conditions.

We support you in designing EMC-compliant devices and systems from the initial concept through to acceptance testing. We assist you in selecting the appropriate EMC regulations and standards for the relevant domestic and international markets and in interpreting and implementing EMC requirements in tenders and contracts.

We perform pre-compliance measurements and support you in EMC-compliant device and system design, EMC system planning, and the resolution of EMC issues. To this end, we have access to all the testing methods of a modern EMC test center.
