The largest production facility in Central Europe for radiopharmaceuticals used in cancer therapy and diagnosis is currently being built in Seibersdorf. The laboratory and production building is being constructed by Seibersdorf Labor GmbH. Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner visited the Seibersdorf Tech Campus to see how construction is progressing.

"We will only be able to maintain our prosperity in Lower Austria if we work on our Nobel Prize mission and invest in research, development, and innovation. This will enable us to hold our own against international competition and create well-paid jobs in Lower Austria. And that is exactly what is happening in Seibersdorf. Thank you very much for investing in this location. Seibersdorf is home to the spirit of research," emphasizes Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner.

By the end of 2026, a new laboratory and production building will be constructed at the Seibersdorf Tech Campus for the international contract manufacturing of radiopharmaceuticals, which are urgently needed in cancer diagnosis and therapy. The major investment, estimated at €15 million, was the reason for a visit by Governor Mikl-Leitner, who was briefed on the project and the progress of construction on site on September 26. She was accompanied by State Parliament representative Christoph Kainz, Christine Sollinger, Mayor of Seibersdorf, and Deputy Mayor Franz Püreschitz Jr.

The guests were welcomed by Markus Neumann, Managing Director of Seibersdorf Labor GmbH, and Alexander Svejkovsky, Managing Director of the parent company AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH. Roland Müller, Head of the Radiopharmaceuticals business unit and future host of the new laboratory, provided insights into the scope and significance of the new production facility. The building complex is a flagship project for cancer therapy, as Roland Müller emphasized, and ensures the supply of patients in Austria. Markus Neumann and Alexander Svejkovsky also highlighted the forward-looking significance of the major investment, which does not require public funding. It represents an important sign of confidence in an economically and politically tense time.

Seibersdorf Labor GmbH also supplies other European countries and overseas. The Radiopharmaceuticals team works closely with pharmaceutical companies worldwide and, as a CDMO (Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization), produces a wide range of radiopharmaceutical products.

Radiopharmaceuticals enable personalized medicine, allowing both examinations and therapies to be carried out with a very high degree of precision. An important area of application for radiopharmaceuticals is prostate cancer. At 25%, this is the most common cancer among men in Austria. Currently, more than 65,000 people in Austria are affected. In this field, the Seibersdorf team produces radiopharmaceuticals for clinical trials.
Other targets for radiopharmaceuticals are tumors in the breast, liver, and brain. Radiopharmaceuticals for pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest forms of cancer, are also currently being tested in studies. Every year, new radiopharmaceuticals are developed in research institutes and then manufactured at the Seibersdorf site under the strictest quality standards.

The final highlight of Governor Mikl-Leitner's visit was a tour of the new laboratory building, where work is already in full swing on the extremely complex interior construction.
The production of radiopharmaceuticals at the Seibersdorf site began over 50 years ago. Almost 25 years ago, Austria's first cyclotron not dedicated purely to scientific purposes was put into operation at the Seibersdorf site. The new building will create one of the largest production facilities of its kind in Europe.

Governor Mikl-Leitner also used the occasion for a short tour of the TFZ Seibersdorf laboratory building, which was constructed by the Lower Austrian economic agency ecoplus and is mainly leased by Seibersdorf Labor GmbH. Professor Günter Gmeiner presented the achievements of the forensic laboratory he heads, which provides important analytical services for courts and the police.
