Impact of pulsed EMF on Humans caused by a Remote Piloted Aerial System

AEROCEPTOR is an international research project co-funded by the European Commission (EC) under the 7th Framework Programme in Security priority. The project is aimed at development of a new and innovative concept of operation to remotely and safely control, slow and stop non‐cooperative vehicles in both land and sea scenarios, by the means of Remote Piloted Aerial System (RPAS).

Therefore various subsystems are installed on the RPAS e.g. a High Power Electromagnetic (HPEM) source, which emits signals in the microwave region, to interfere with the electronics of the non-cooperative vehicle. According to health related limits given in international standards, it is essential to evaluate the exposure arising from such HPEM systems to protect persons e.g. bystanders (population) near the main beam of the system from detrimental effects.

For this reason an exposure evaluation according to the ICNIRP limits of 1998 for all persons potentially exposed by the RPAS was performed using plane wave and transmitting antenna. Evaluations for a freestanding person nearby the non-cooperative vehicle, so called bystander, was computed using the numeric simulation tool SEMCAD X. Exposure scenarios in various incoming directions of the main beam of the RPAS source for a person sitting in a car were also analysed.

The simulations have shown that an exceedance of limits of exposure standards is possible for the scenarios described above. To get a more realistic exposure scenario multipath propagation and obstacles have to be considered in future investigations, too.
